How it works

About $6 a year from each customer

  1. Your bill rounds up

A $59.50 bill becomes $60. The extra 50 cents goes into a trust account for the Share Program.

  2. A citizen committee reviews

A seven-member committee of Benton residents reviews applications using guidelines approved by the commission.

  3. Neighbors get help

Approved customers receive help with their Benton Utilities bill.

How to apply for assistance

  • Fill out the Share Application. Print it from this page or pick one up at the billing office.
  • Return it to the Billing Service Department at 1501 Citizens Way by the 15th of the month.
  • In November and December, applications may be due earlier because of the holidays.

Serve on the Share Board

Committee members must live in the City of Benton. The position is unpaid; Share Board expenses may be reimbursed.

Why it exists

Created for neighbors facing high energy costs

The program was created in response to rising energy costs. Each year, some customers have trouble paying their bills at least once because of an unexpected hardship. The Share Program helps those who qualify.

The Citizens Committee may expand the program to other community needs, such as food banks or weatherproofing kits, if the trust holds enough to justify it.
