Prevent frozen water lines

Keep your pipes from freezing

Benton's temperatures usually stay above freezing, but when they drop below it, unprotected pipes can freeze. That can mean no water until they thaw, or a burst line and plumbing repairs.

  • Shut off outside water valves, disconnect hoses, and drain the pipes through an open faucet.
  • Let a trickle of hot and cold water drip. The cost of the water is small compared to frozen pipes. Do not run water into a drain line that is exposed to extreme cold.
  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors so warm air reaches pipes under the sinks.
  • Heat unused rooms that have plumbing, especially along a north wall.
  • Insulate pipes in unheated areas like the garage or crawl space. Heat tape or thermostat-controlled heat cable helps on exposed pipes.
  • Seal air leaks around doors and windows.
  • Away for a few days? Set the thermostat to 55 degrees.

Be prepared for storms

Before the storm arrives

Inside the home

  • Stock non-perishable food, medicine, baby supplies and pet food.
  • Keep bottled water: one gallon per person per day.
  • Check flashlights and a battery radio, and buy extra batteries.
  • Keep some cash on hand. ATMs may not work in an outage.
  • Turn the refrigerator to its coldest setting. Closed, most food stays cold up to 12 hours.
  • Unplug sensitive electronics.
  • Keep a first-aid kit handy and important documents in a safe box.

Outside the home

  • Watch for downed power lines and stay away from them.
  • Fill your vehicle's gas tank, and a spare gas can if you have one.
  • Lower a TV antenna well before storm winds arrive, staying clear of power lines.

Cold-weather outages

When the power and the heat go out

Most heating systems stop when the power goes out. If you have a fireplace or wood stove, keep plenty of wood on hand through the cold months.

Protect your appliances

Turn off large appliances that come on automatically. If everything comes back on at once it can overload your home's circuits. Leave one lamp on so you know when power is restored.
